Service Description

This course is perfect for beginners who enjoyed the taster class and are interested in developing confidence in their pottery skills, or for those who are looking for an engaging, creative activity for a couple weeks. The 8 week course offers more taught practice time on the wheel and hence our students will leave with strong confidence in their potting abilities. Beginner classes are a mix of closely guided tutoring and self directed development. Students will expand upon their previous knowledge of clay and also learn about clay manipulation at several stages in the process including turning and glazing. Students will have ample time to practise throwing at the wheel and can elect to opt for handbuilding if they so wish and discuss with the tutor. We aim to make sure students leave with more skills, confidence, and several pieces of work that are truly handmade by themselves from start to finish. What follows is a rough outline of what will be taught week to week: Week 1 -Practicing the fundamentals of throwing Week 2- Trimming work made in the first class Week 3- Throwing with larger amounts of clay, coning, wedging Week 4- Trimming and Glazing Week 5- Working on your project Week 6- Working on your project Week 7-Finishing off your project Week 8- Glazing -They are no added costs- all clay, glazes, and firings are included in the course price -Please prepare for the class by cutting your nails short, wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty (clay does come out easily in the wash), and bringing a tea towel and a plastic bag We understand that an 8 week commitment is a big ask. Classes that are missed can either be made up by attending another course's identical class (offered once per course to each student) or in a self directed drop in, which both can be arranged by talking to the tutor or emailing us at nam@cernamic.com. If you know you will miss a class please let us know in advance so we can figure out the best way to accommodate. Please try and make sure you are able to attend the 1st, 2nd, and 4th classes as we will be teaching fundamental techniques.
