  • I forgot to pick up my pots from my taster sessions, what do I do?
We can store your completed pieces for 4 weeks following your collection email. However, as we are a working studio, sadly we cannot endlessly store student's creations. If you are unable to collect in this timeframe, please let us know and we can come to another arrangement.
  • Are student discounts available?
We currently have a discount for Goldsmiths Students and Alumni that is 10% off all our courses. To enquire please contact us with proof of enrollment or let us know who recommended you!
  • Why does my pots looks different than what I've created/samples you shown?
Please note that due to the nature of clay, results may differ from expectation, including but not limited to: Glaze may vary from examples and are for reference only Texture created may not shown in the final result Pots will appear smaller from what you created from class, since clay have a 15% shrinkage Pots may not be completely cleaned and may have small lumps of clay Pots may be cracked or exploded We try our best to mitigate this problem but these are inevitable. Unfortunately, the class is non-refundable and we are only able to reimburse you if your work exploded.
  • Do I need to bring anything with me to my classes? What’s provided?
You don’t need to bring anything to classes. We recommend working with trimmed nails and wearing old clothes as you will get stuck into the clay! (clay does come out of clothes). We provide basic tools and aprons for use during our courses. At the glazing stage, Cernamic also supplies a variety of glazes for students to use to finish their pieces.
  • Are my pots food safe?
The short answer is yes. If a comprehensive layer of glaze is covering the surface touching food, then your pots, plates, mugs and anything else you can think of are food safe. Unglazed areas are porous and can harbour bacteria so it's best to check in with one of the team at Cernamics if in doubt!
  • When will my finished, fired pieces be ready?
After a taster class, you'll receive an email letting you know that your pots are ready to be collected. This is usually 3 weeks after the class as your pieces need enough time to dry and be fired twice.
  • I want to get into ceramics but I don't know where to start!
Our 2 hour taster or 3 hour taster sessions are great for anyone without any experience working with clay. Our 2 hour tasters focus on throwing (using a wheel). Meanwhile, our 3 hour tasters are split between throwing and handbuilding practise. Once you've had a taster and would like to continue your ceramics journey, we recommend joining one of our beginner courses where you'll be introduced to the theory of making ceramics and developing your own practice.
  • When can I collect my pots?
We are open for collections between 2-6pm on Cernamic Deptford: Thursdays, Saturdays Cernamic Stokey: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Unfortunately when working with clay some pieces do break. We try our best to mitigate this problem but it is inevitable. If your work hasn’t made it out of the kiln we will reimburse you. When you arrive please ring the doorbell/call the number on the gate for someone to let you in. If you cannot make these times please send us an email and we can arrange another date and time for collection. If you have any questions please send us an email at nam@cernamic.com
  • What is a drop-in session and how do they work?
For past students, we provide drop-in session where they can continue to develop their practise. To book, email nam@cernamic.com or call 07985138854 . Drop-in sessions are charged by the hour and clay can be purchased at the studio. You can read more about our clay charges on our products page.
