Service Description

This is a pottery taster course for all LGBTQIA+ people who would like to get their hands on some clay and have a fun time bonding with others over how difficult pottery is. In this course you will learn to throw on the wheel, then trim your work and lastly glaze it. You will also learn how to correctly set up and clean up to avoid any health and safety issues. There will be one class dedicated to hand building so you can have a little introduction to it, but the course will be mostly focusing on wheel throwing. This class will be taught by Rita, a queer, non-binary tattoo artist that has been doing pottery as a hobby on and off since 2018 and has now found joy in teaching it to others. “I know that in our community it’s sometimes hard to socialise in settings that aren’t around nightlife and drinking and how some of us more wholesome queers would love to just parallel play with each other while throwing around some jokes, so I thought this class could be a great opportunity for that. I find that pottery can be a really grounding activity and I know that’s also very needed for us.” Join the course, learn a new skill, make some pots and maybe some new friends! Here’s a rough outline of what you’ll be learning week to week: Week 1: Health and safety; wedging; setting up your wheel; introduction to throwing; taking down your setup and cleaning up. Week 2: Practicing the fundamentals of throwing Week 3: Throwing on the wheel Week 4: Trimming Week 5: Hand building and trimming Week 6: Glazing They are no added costs- all clay, glazes, and firings are included in the course price -Please prepare for the class by cutting your nails short, wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty (clay does come out easily in the wash), and bringing a tea towel and a plastic bag We understand that a 6 week commitment is a big ask. Classes that are missed can either be made up by attending another course's identical class (offered once per course to each student) or in a self directed drop in, which both can be arranged by talking to the tutor or emailing us at nam@cernamic.com. If you know you will miss a class please let us know in advance so we can figure out the best way to accommodate. Please try and make sure you are able to attend the 1st,4 th, and 6th classes as we will be teaching fundamental techniques.
